Spectrals – S/T 7"

Ello Ello, what's all this then? More throw-back fuzzy dream pop from a chap in Leeds who calls himself “L” (er, ya, he should get over that, fast). Regardless, it’s bloody good stuff really and well worth adding to your shuffle for a bit. Look for his full length LP in 2010.

Shannon and the Clams – I Wanna Go Home

These Oakland based misfits have captured the essence of trashy 50’s sock hop pop and given it the low-fi treatment. The LP reeks of hairspray, filthy porcelain ashtrays and your grandma’s plastic covered couch. If David Lynch every makes a sequel to Blue Velvet he’ll want to call these weirdoes for the soundtrack.

The King Khan & BBQ Show - Invisible Girl

The third LP from these guys doesn’t disappoint one damn bit. True, Invisible Girl is perhaps a little more polished than their two previous savage masterpieces, but nothing has been lost in the process. KK & BBQ have just got more tight and out and out Good! Two punkers on stage, often in drag, making crazy fun music together, what’s not to like? If you are unfamiliar with these heroes among men, Invisible Girl is the perfect departure point. Dive in.

Spencey Dude and The Doodles – Debut 7’’

If you are going to San Francisco, to hell with wearing flowers in your hair. Instead, go see Spencey Dude, that is, if you have a penchant for sloppy bubblegum garage rock. The Doodles are dripping with sappiness, unabashedly silly and recklessly careen off course and out of tune towards their inevitable fiery roadside end. So, you know, see ‘em now.

The Twerps - S/T Cassette

Here’s another gem from the magical land of Down Under. The Twerps are a four piece from Melbourne Australia that sound like English 80’s post punk, but with lot more garage fuzz, all on the miracle of cassette tape. There is a nice change up for what I think is the best song on the tape, Dance Alone, where the band pour on the cheesy 50’s high-school stylings. Australians, you never know what they will do next.

Fergus and Geronimo - Blind Muslim Girl 7”

Jason Kelly (Wax Museums) and Andrew Savage (Teenage Cool Kids), two unkempt nerdlingers from Denton Texas with lot of buzz surrounding them. Check out this single, the better I think of the whopping two they have released so far, to hear what the hubbub is about. It’s good mix of all the right seasonings, soul, pop, garage, and I think I hear sage in there.

White Mystery - Powerglove 7"

South Park’s Eric Cartman once postulated that “Gingers”, people with red hair, have no souls. To find proof to the contrary you need look no further than Chicago’s White Mystery, a duo consisting of the venerable Alex White of Alex White and the Red Orchestra fame and her little brother Francis. Alex sings like Grace Slick and makes her guitar snarl, while young Francis beats the drums like a mental patient. It’s a rip roar’n, foot stomp’n, hip shake’n garage attack that undoubtedly would be even better live. If only I lived in Chicago. (Hozac, 2009)

The Cave Weddings – Bring Your Love 7”

This is a three piece band out of Albany, New York with penchant for cute garage pop that sounds like its right out of 1964. Two guys and a girl making music that sounds like the Archies meets the Sonics, or some equally silly comparison. Eric LaGrange’s presence in the band may interest some who remember him from such bands as the Romance Novels. But don’t expect anything like the Novels here, these songs are tight, rocking and gosh gee willikers, pretty fucking swell. (Hozac, 2009)

Super Wild Horses – 6 Song EP 7"

These two ladies from Melbourne Australia make a garage rock sound so primitive that it ultimately mirrors their inhospitable continent; harsh, venomous, ablaze, but irresistibly beautiful. The girls rip and tare at their instruments like two sexy ayatollahs of rock and rollas. It’s loud, disjointed, stripped down to the wires but crackling with soul. (Aarght! Records,2009)

The White Wires – Pretty Girl 7”

Here is some more great music from the Great White North. The White Wires are an adorable little three piece band hailing from Ottawa who play super charged, supper fun, super catchy power pop tunes guaranteed to make you move. Crazy kids. Go to their shows, buy their swag. (Trouble In Mind, 2009)

Real Estate - S/T LP

The much anticipated debut LP from this New Jersey band is certainly worth picking up. Simple melodies are slowed down, baked in the sun, medicated with corona and weed and numbed with monotony to create a sort of Sunny Afternoon Nap Pop. Call it what you like, there is a lot of this fuzzy indie low-fi being made these days, but Real Estate, though perhaps not the best choice for long late night car rides, stands out as premo stuff.
